Beckham gets another nomination

January 23, 2004 10:41 IST

Gurinder Chadha's Bend It Like Beckham has bagged another prestigious nomination.

The Writers Guild of America nominated Chadha, her husband Paul Mayeda Berges and Guljit Bindra's screenplay for Bend It Like Beckham in the original screenplay category.

They will compete with Steven Knight for Dirty Pretty Things -- Stephen Frears' film which also deals with immigrants in Britain, albeit in more gritty light --and Tom McCarthy for The Station Agent, a much admired love story featuring a midget.

Writers Guild of America nominations are considered 'an indicator of Academy Awards sentiment.'

'Guild winners in the original screenplay category have matched Oscar choices in 11 years over the past 21 while the WGA adapted screenplay award has matched with the Oscar winner in 14 years during the same period,' www.hollywood.com wrote.

Bend It Like Beckham is also a nominee in the Golden Globe for Best Film (Comedy) category. The Golden Globes will be announced on Sunday evening Los Angeles time (early morning in India).
