Devdas receives BAFTA nomination

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas has been nominated in the 'Best Foreign Language Film' category at the British Academy Film Awards this year, while non-resident Indian director Gurinder Chadha's Bend It Like Beckham has got nomination in the 'Outstanding British Film of the Year' category.

Announcing the nominations in London on Tuesday, Sir Ian McKellen, chief of BAFTA, said that the musical Chicago and 19th century epic Gangs of New York have both received 12 nominations, including in the 'Best Film' and 'Best Director' categories.

The Hours, The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers and The Pianist are the other movies in the frame for the best film.

The Hours, Bend It Like Beckham, Dirty Pretty Things, The Magdalena Sisters and The Warrior, another film produced by an NRI, fight it out for best British film.

The BAFTA awards will be held on February 23.

Other nominations:

Best Actress: Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep [both for The Hours], Salma Hayek [Frida], Halle Berry [Monsters Ball] and Renee Zellweger [Chicago].

Best Actor: Adrien Brody [The Pianist], Daniel Day-Lewis [Gangs of New York], Nicolas Cage [Adaptation], Jack Nicholson [About Schmidt] and Michael Caine [The Quiet American].

Best Supporting Actress: Catherine Zeta Jones and Queen Latifah [Chicago], Juliane Moore [The Hours], Meryl Streep [Adaptation] and Toni Collette [About a Boy].
