'You were part of my childhood, Dada'

'These days you are the main inspiration for a lot of young film-makers. They are mimicking your films.'

The film fraternity mourned the loss of one of its legends, Basu Chatterjee, who passed away on June 4:

 

Lata Mangeshkar, who sang Rimjhim Gire Sawan in 1979's Manzil condoled his death:

'I am deeply pained by this news and pay my humble tributes to him,' Lataji tweeted.

Amitabh Bachchan, who starred in Manzil, tweeted, 'Prayers and Condolences on the passing of Basu Chatterjee.. a quiet, soft spoken, gentle human .. his films reflected the lives of middle India .. did 'MANZIL' with him .. a sad loss .. Folded hands .. in these climes often remembered for 'rim jhim gire saawan'.

Shabana Azmi/strong> worked with Basuda in three films. She tweeted: 'Deeply saddened to hear about Basu Chatterjee's passing away. A prolific film-maker, he was the pioneer of what came to be regarded as middle of the road cinema. I was fortunate to have done 3 lovely films with him Swami Apne Paraye and Jeena Yahan. All life-like characters. RIP.'

Hema Malini recalled working with Basuda in her mother Jaya Chakaraborty's productions Swami and Ratnadeep.

'He will be sorely missed by his many fans and also by the film industry of which he was an integral part. Rest in peace Basuda,' Hemaji, who also starred in Basuda's Dillagi with husband Dharmendra, tweeted.

Rajit Kapur, who played the title role in Chatterjee's television hit detective series Byomkesh Bakshi, remembered the director as 'practical' man with a 'great sense of humour'', who was never bogged down by crisis.

'That attitude kept him going. He'd look for solutions and I've learnt that kind of practical approach from him. That's the approach he applied to his work,' Kapur told PTI.

Aamir Khan posted: 'Really sorry to hear the sad news of Basu Chatterjee passing away. My heartfelt condolences to Basuda's family and friends. His contribution to Indian Cinema will always be remembered.'

Anil Kapoor, who worked with the director in the hit Chameli Ki Shaadi, remembered Basuda as a film-maker ahead of his time.

'Basu Chatterjee will be truly missed. He was an effortless genius and an amazing human being. May he rest in peace,' Kapoor tweeted.

'Everyday brings with it some bad news! You were part of my childhood Dada,' noted Director Sudhir Mishra.

'Humane, gentle, witty! These days you are the main inspiration for a lot of young film-makers. They are mimicking your films. N they lie when they say different films didn't work in the past. Yours did.'

Goutam Ghosh recalled how Basuda readily agreed to arrange an arriflex camera when he was in desperate search of one during the making of his 1984 film Paar.

"Basuda was very supportive to young directors. When I had requested him to arrange me an arriflex camera he readily agreed at a much lesser rate than the market price then," Ghosh told PTI.

Bengali star Prosenjit Chatterjee is trying to come to terms with Basu's demise.

'A legendary film-maker and a master story teller... I had the opportunity to work with him in Hochcheta Ki in 2008. This is indeed a great loss for Indian cinema,' Prosenjit said.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker shared his experience of working with the late director on the 1989 feature, Kamla Ki Maut.

'Sad to hear about the passing of A GREAT DIRECTOR' whose every film, is a GEM! I had the great honour of working with Basu Da in Kamla Ki Maut! The most gentle Director that I worked with as an Actor! Condolences to @guharupaliji and his family,' he tweeted.

Manoj Bajpayee remembered Basuda as a 'master storyteller' and posted, 'Learned the meaning of simple storytelling with fine nuances!! Thank you Basu Da for all the great stories!! Rest in peace sir!!'

Director Madhur Bhandarkar: 'Sad to hear the demise of Veteran Filmmaker Shri Basu Chatterjee. Will be always remembered for his Light Hearted comedies & Simplistic Films. #OmShanti.'

DirectorSujoy Ghosh: 'Basu Chatterjee moves on. for me very few sees the lighter side of life like he did. all his films have a smirk on their faces. i'm a big fan. and i have kahaani 2 to prove it.'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee: 'Saddened at the demise of legendary film director and screenwriter Basu Chatterjee. He gave us gems like 'Chhoti Si Baat', 'Chitchor', 'Rajanigandha', 'Byomkesh Bakshi', 'Rajni' among others. Condolences to his family, friends, fans & the entire film fraternity.'

Politician Supriya Sule: 'Saddened to hear about the demise of Basu Chatterjee - Veteran Filmmaker. My thoughts and prayers with his family. My Heartfelt Condolences. May He Rest in Peace.'

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: 'Deeply pained at demise of legendary filmmaker & screenwriter Basu Chatterjee Ji, who was himself an 'institution of art' and 'sea of culture'.
