National Awards 2017: An important day in Akshay's life

Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor dressed traditionally at the 64th National Awards, held at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Information & Broadcasting and Rajyavardhan Rathore, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, shared the stage with President Pranab Mukherjee, who gave away the prestigious awards.

Akshay Kumar shared a picture of wife Twinkle and son Aarav all ready for the big day.

The actor won the Best Actor Award for his film Rustom and he tweeted, 'An important day in my life with the most important people in the world to me, my family #NationalFilmAwards.'

Akshay congratulates Sonam Kapoor, who received a special mention for her role in Neerja.

Incidentally, both actors are co-starring in Padman, and were in fact, shooting for the film together when the National Awards were announced in April.

Interestingly, it was rumoured boyfriend Anand Ahuja, who sat next to Sonam and rooted for her.

Daddy Anil Kapoor also attended the awards ceremony and was visibly excited when his little girl accepted the award. He made sure to capture the big moment on his phone.

Her film Neerja is based on a true story, and won rave reviews.

Akshay's Rustom is also based on a true incident.

But his film got mixed reviews, and raised many eyebrows when it won him the award.

Atul Kasbekar, producer of Neerja, shared this picture and wrote, 'On way to the #NationalAwards2017 and turns out that I have an excellent neighbor for company @ShoojitSircar.'

Producer Shoojit Sircar's PINK won an award for the Best Film on Social Issues.
