February 11, 2012 16:08 IST

Actor Amitabh Bachchan underwent an abdominal surgery on Saturday morning at the Seven Hills Hospital in suburban Andheri.

Speaking to media personnel, his son and actor Abhishek Bachchan said the surgery had been successful.

'My father underwent abdominal surgery at a hospital today. The operation was minor and it lasted approximately three hours. He is fine and in the recovery room," said Abhishek.

He added, "If all goes well, he will be discharged on Sunday".

Talking about why Bachchan needed the surgery, Abhishek said, "The issue and the problem is a legacy of the past, in particular the accident of 1982 while filming Coolie".

Bachchan got admitted in the hospital in the early hours of Saturday.

Earlier, hospital authorities had called a press conference and Dr Asthana updated the media about the surgery.

He said "Amitabh Bachchan got admitted today morning. He was wheeled into the operation theatre at 9.30 am and he is undergoing surgery right now. The surgery is going well,"

He added that Amitabh Bachchan had earlier complained of "pain in the abdomen. He underwent a few tests and it was found that surgical intervention will relieve him of his problems and the actor agreed".

"He is very stable," said Dr Asthana but refused to comment on the actor's medical condition.

He said, "It is his personal matter. All I can say is that he underwent an abdominal surgery," said Dr Asthana.

Meanwhile, Abhishek tweeted to thank the superstar's fans for their support and good wishes. He wrote, "Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting".
