Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore appears upset with the action film's U/A certificate, asserting that the movie deserved an A certificate. The film had too much violence, she felt, and was not suitable for children. Tagore clarified that she had not seen Ghajini herself, but had heard about its violence from others.

A U/A certificate implies that children can watch the film with parental guidance, whereas an A certificate would bar anyone below 18 years from watching the movie.

Almost two weeks after Ghajini was released, Mumbai [Images] lecturer Pratibha Nathani watched the film and felt that it needed an adult certificate. She moved the Bombay high court, challenging the Censor Board's decision to grant Ghajini an U/A certificate.

The high court has forwarded her petition to the central government and the Censor Board, and asked both entities to reply to the notice.
