MGR cast her in Thirudaathe. Following doubts about this Kannadathu Paingili's (loosely translated, the Kannada Nightingale) ability to speak Tamil, he cast her in Nadodi Mannan as well. Already starring actress P Bhanumathi, the film had Saroja Devi in an encounter with a python -- upon which she promptly fainted.
But Saroja Devi, to quote veteran stage and film actor C R Simha, was 'in the right place and the right time.'
She was swiftly cast opposite the then reigning kings like Gemini Ganesan and Sivaji Ganesan, in Kalyana Parisu and Baga Pirivinai -- and arrived in movie-dom with a bang.
