Bollywood's most beloved vamp

Irfat Ezekiel was born on December 5, 1932 to a Jewish family in Mumbai.

She was in her teens when she was spotted by Sardar Akhtar, wife of filmmaker Mehboob Khan, who gave her the name Nadira. After making her debut in 1952's Aan, she gained popularity playing a rich socialite in Shree 420. And a star was born.

Between the fifties and seventies, Nadira notched up a number of hits, including Amar Akbar Anthony and Pakeezah.

As is usually the case though, she was typecast, and began appearing mainly as a vamp. She was a successful vamp though, and took home a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Julie.

She also appeared in a few international productions like Merchant Ivory's The Guru and Cotton Mary.

Nadira died in Mumbai on February 9, 2006, at the age of 73.
