Farhan Akhtar's upcoming acting debut, Rock On! has a lot to offer besides rocking music. The other attractions inlcude Prachi Desai, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny.
The film directed by Aryan director Abhishek Kapoor, is about a rock band and who better to play a musician than a true-blue musician himself?
Yup, we're talking about Luke Kenny, the musician whose many talents inlcude veejaying and contributing to Rolling Stone India. Nithya Ramani caught up with the star for more dope. Excerpts:
How did you get into music?
It is completely due to my grandparents and father. My grandfather was a jazz drummer in the 60s in Delhi and my father has his own band in Kolkata. My grandmother was a Bollywood buff. While she would listen to Bollywood songs, my grandad would listen to jazz and my dad to the Beatles. So I was bombarded with music from all sides and maybe that is what got me interested and inclined to music.
What was your first step towards the entertainment industry?
When I was 11-12 year's old, I saw Michael Jackson for the first time. His dancing fascinated me and led me to break dancing, which was a big trend in those days. I honed on my dancing skills through college functions. During one of the shows, one of the judges was Arshad Warsi (he was a choreographer then). He asked me to join his group which I did. I did a lot of dance shows with him.
Around the same time I got into deejaying, which I did for two years before Channel V was launched. The channel was looking for a Veejay and they saw me at one of the new year parties playing music and jumping around with my long hair. They offered me the job and that is how Veejaying happened.
You had also directed a film (13th Floor). How did direction come to you?
Yes. It released in May 2006. Since I was completely inspired by music and had been playing music all the while I wanted to make a film of my own. A few friends and I decided to go to film school with all the money we had saved. Then we decided it was pointless going to a film school and coming out with a degree which would not entitle us to a job. So we decided to make our own film to have something substantial to prove our worth.
