Reservoir Gods

Vijay Anand's Johny Mera Naam (1970)

Blood-red dripping titles, set to Kalyanji Anandji music. Johny Mera Naam is a movie that gives me multiple orgasms. Dev Anand is a dashing jailbird. Or is he? Hema Malini is a gangster's moll. Or is she?

Great songs, big stars, terrific pace and attitude. This is top-notch mainstream Hindi cinema of the 1970s. Nobody dared call us Bollywood then.

Vijay Anand's song picturisations are zany and cinematic. Songs like O mere Raja, Pal bhar ke liye take the story forward. Govind bolo ajee Gopal bolo, a bhajan, is shot like a thriller.

JMN has multiple story strands that come together in one of the most terrific and well-written climax scenes ever.

There's a little homage to this film in Johnny Gaddaar.
