This time, it was the turn of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who was upset after Lagey Raho Munnabhai lost the Oscar race to Rang De Basanti. It was Aamir's second chance though, and he was better prepared.

'My second visit to the Oscars will generate curiosity,' he said, 'and is ultimately beneficial for the movie. I will definitely use all my contacts and advise the director and producer at all times.'

Chopra, however, sent his film independently.

Deepa Mehta's Water was selected as Canada's entry. It made it to the final list, while Rang De Basanti lost out. In the final round, even Water lost to the German film Lives of Others.
