This was directed by Mahendran, who predated Mani Ratnam as a director who used minimum dialogue and maximum visual effects to take a movie forward.

It was also the movie where Rajni won over a huge female fan following. He played a winch operator Kali, who doted on his sister. Fans who had till then seen only a fiery Rajni saw a tender, caring persona in this movie. This movie, where he dispelled whatever doubts remained about his acting credibility, also won him a slew of state and critics awards.

He established that he can be a director's actor too. Mahendran explored this new found persona with films like Johnny, Un Kannil neer Vazhinthal, Kai Kodukkum Kai and helped Rajni win much critical acclaim. More importantly, these movies helped Rajni expand his fan base from youngsters to the families and the women.
