Sony says no to disclaimer

rediff Entertainment Bureau | May 19, 2006 20:02 IST

The Da Vinci censorship battle might not be over just yet.

The verdict was clear that The Da Vinci Code would be released without cuts, but with an 'A' certificate and disclaimer. Now, Sony Pictures doesn't seem keen on the disclaimer.

The Censor Board wants a disclaimer at the beginning and end saying the film is 'a work of pure fiction and has no correspondence to historical facts of the Christian religion.'

Da Vinci Code: Complete Coverage

Via an official press release, Sony Pictures Releasing India believes the film already has a legal card and, while it appreciates the Board's clearing the film, it doesn't believe the card needs to be modified. The existing legal card says: 'The characters and incidents portrayed and the names herein are fictitious, and any similarity to the name, character or history of any person is entirely coincidental and unintentional.'

The press release goes on to say that the request for new language has resulted in a delay in the film's release -- which is why we don't see it playing in Indian theatres on May 19, the international release date. Sony hopes 'an agreement can be reached as soon as possible', which doesn't exactly translate to an agreement to use the Censor Board's given disclaimer.

Fanaa or Da Vinci Code?
