6. Once Upon A Time In America (1984)
Director: Sergio Leone
Starring: Robert De Niro, James Woods, Joe Pesci, Elizabeth McGovern
When we talk guns, we talk Sergio Leone.
Whether it's the original three-hour version, or the four-hour spectacular released on DVD, this is one film that absolutely refuses to age. A mammoth effort with six listed screenwriters, it was rewritten innumerable times.
And yet the result is so blissfully coherent. An aging Robert De Niro, waxing nostalgic on life gone by. A gritty, disturbing film, surprisingly violent considering when it was made.
An often overlooked masterpiece of the genre.
