7. Bugsy Malone (1976)
Director: Alan Parker
Starring: Scott Baio, Jodie Foster, John Cassisi, Martin Lev, Florrie Dugger
This is why gangster films are fun in the first place. Alan Parker took the cliche-coated Bugsy tale, and tossed it into childhood.
The film remains about the womanising former boxer Bugsy Malone's rise to mafia superstardom, but the firearms are replaced by the fabulous 'splat guns' that annihilate victims with a spray of whipped cream. Suited to their average age of 12, the mobsters ride around in pedal-driven cars.
The film is a musical and the plot structure is as tight as a Frank Sinatra film, the children performing fabulously to create a bit of cinematic magic.
A gangster film without blood, yes. But with tons of heart.
