Coming from Kavithalaya, veteran director K Balachander's banner, Ayya is another eagerly awaited film. Ever since she was booked as Rajniknath's heroine in Chandramukhi, the people of Tamil Nadu are curious to see Nayanthara, and this is her first Tamil film.

An interesting bit of trivia is that Ayya was written with Rajnikanth in mind for the lead role.

The film is directed by Hari, who made the blockbuster Saami (with Vikram and Trisha) for Kavithalaya in 2003. Films like Saami are, unlike K Balachander films, typical commercial ventures with the right mix of the ingredients necessary for box office success.

Ayya stars Sarath Kumar in a dual role, that of father and son. Nayantara plays the love interest for Sarath the son, while Lakshmi, back on the silver screen after a five-year gap, plays wife to Sarath the father.

Being a rural story, Ayya, was shot mainly in Tirunelveli. The question on everyone's mind is: will Kavithalaya strike gold like it did with Saami?
