One of the first composers to give me songs was Shyam Sunderji. His Sun lo sajan dil ki baat (Lahore) was a big hit.

Many new music directors came in. Shankar-Jaikishan ushered in a totally new era. I remember K Dutta who composed music when I was a 14- or 15-year-old child artiste.

In Badi Maa, I acted and sang a song that he composed. I did some hit songs for [composer] R C Boral in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. I didn't sing too many songs for him, but we shared a cordial relationship.

My successful phase began in 1947. Shankar-Jaikishan grew as artistes alongside me. Laxmikant-Pyarelal, who also did a lot of their best work with me, were their successors.

But the variety of work I did with Shankar-Jaikishan is unparalleled. I love my songs with them, like Jiya beqarar hai and Barsaat mein humse mile tum sajan from Barsaat; Awaara ae mere dil and Na chedo kal ke afsane in Raat Aur Din; Man mohana bade jhoothe in Seema; Sayonara and Mujhse tum mil gaye humdum from Love In Tokyo; Awaaz deke humein tum bulao in Professor and Ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar in Junglee.
