'Rekha has never been troublesome'

Lata Khubchandani | October 07, 2004 17:06 IST

Saawan KumarThe experienced filmmaker, Saawan Kumar Tak, speaks of Rekha -- the perfectionist among actresses.

She's a very old friend. I have done five films with her -- Hawas, Souten Ki Beti, Saajan Ki Saheli, Pyaar Ki Jeet and Mother. This is no mean feat given she hardly does even two films with the same director. She's that choosy.

I remember it was in 1972 or 1973, she had come over because she had a lot of friends in my building. She heard a song I had just recorded and said, "I am going to perform on this!" and did an item number in my film, Hawas. She didn't charge me anything, and used her own clothes!

The song, Aao yaaro gao, became very popular. Since then we have been close friends.

It has been a great experience working with her. She is such a cooperative artiste. She always comes on time, never gives any trouble, and is very friendly.

She has never been troublesome. I don't know why people say she is difficult. She may be difficult if you are not straight with her -- hypocrisy upsets her.

What can one say about her? Whatever one may say is too little. She is very meticulous about details, and it is a pleasure having her in one's film.

I just have to call her and she comes to meet me. She never plays the temperamental artiste with me.

I wish her a long life, and may she be ever youthful.
