Penelope Cruz and Tom Cruise in Vanilla SkyThis just in from People magazine: after an intense three-year relationship, Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have 'decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore'. Shooting films at two ends of the world for most of their relationship has apparently taken its toll on the couple.

Cruise's sister and publicist Lee Anne DeVette told People: 'They broke up at the end of January and it's amicable.' And Robert Garlock, Cruz's representative, said: 'They remain good friends and still talk often.' He also told People, 'there is no other person involved'.

Incidentally, DeVette came on the scene after Cruise and his longtime publicist Pat Kingsley bade adieu. Recent reports mentioned that Cruise fired Kingsley because they disagreed over his support of Scientology, but DeVette denied them.

Scientology was ruled out as the reason for the Cruise-Cruz split, said Garlock, adding, Cruz is 'not a Scientologist, but she has taken (church) courses and she's found them beneficial'.

The high-profile couple met in 2000 while filming Vanilla Sky. and began dating in 2001, after the equally high-profile breakup of Cruise's marriage to Nicole Kidman. When Cruise and Cruz were not working -- which was rare -- they headed for Cruise's Colorado house.

The two have also been repeatedly quashing rumours of an impending marriage, and that Cruz was pregnant. Earlier, a wave of speculation arose when Cruz was absent at the Golden Globe Awards in January. Cruise was nominated for his performance in The Last Samurai. Cruz had reportedly hastened to be with her ailing father in Spain.

The 41-year-old actor is has now finished the crime thriller Collateral, and is in pre-production for Mission: Impossible 3. The 29-year-old Cruz is now filming Sahara, in Morocco.
