Actors Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor on Wednesday slapped legal notices on Mid-Day -- a tabloid in Mumbai -- demanding an unconditional apology for publishing photographs that showed them kissing.

Mid-Day said the photographs were clicked at a party in a restaurant.

The actors denied they had posed for such scenes in real life, but Mid-Day Editor Aakar Patel said they were indeed Shahid and Kareena.

Kareena slapped a notice on the tabloid. She also asked for an apology and claimed Rs 20 crore in damages.

Shahid sent a notice separately.

Kareena told a news channel that she belonged to a respectable family and she could never have done this in public.

"The pictures are false and baseless and not ours," she said.

Shahid also appeared on television to deny the photographs.

He also denied having gone to the restaurant 'Rain' in the last three months and said the last time he and Kareena had gone there was on September 21, her birthday.

"On that day, there were several persons in that restaurant and we could not have done this," he said.

"I am shocked and upset over such photographs and also because the newspaper did not approach us for any clarification," Shahid said.

Patel, however, told the channel that Mid-Day would fight the legal battle.
