The Rediff Interview/Aarti Chhabria

'Films are perfect for me'

Vijay Singh | October 23, 2003

Govinda and Aarti in Raja BhaiyaAarti Chhabria is very confident.

She believes Raja Bhaiya, her comedy film with Govinda, is her ticket to what she expects from Bollywood.

She tells Vijay Singh why this film will bring her fame:

How did Raja Bhaiya happen?

Maan Singh Deep [the producer] liked some of my photos with Nakul Kapoor [Tumse Achha Kaun Hai] that appeared in a magazine.

Director Raman Kumar called and told me the story over the phone. I liked it. It is a challenging role, a performance-oriented one. That is why I found it exciting.

What is your role in the film?

The film is a comedy, but there is a lot of depth in my character. I had to act the part of a mentally challenged girl at one point in the film. I worked hard on my body language, expressions, etc.

You will also find that my character has two shades. Beyond this, I can't say more about my role.

How was it working with Govinda, who is well-known for his comic timing?

Bollywood goes traditional!
Govinda is a very simple, decent and punctual person. I never felt I was working with such a big star. I thought he was very caring. He would give me a lot of tips. Whenever he was around, the atmosphere would definitely be lighter. It was fun working with him.

You where injured recently, weren't you? How are you now?

I'm okay now. The accident happened during the shooting of a Telugu film in Austria. Sriram and I were in the middle of a lake. I slipped and fell. Sriram fell on top of me.

I nearly froze there for 45 minutes. My back hurt. I was crying. But there were no fractures.

What other films are you working on?

I am working on Miss You for Ajay Chandlok, opposite Sohail Khan. I am also doing a Telugu film opposite Sriram.

You were not seen after Awara Pagal Deewana. Why?

Aarti Chhabria and Nakul Kapur in Tumse Achcha Kaun HaiI did get a lot of offers, but I wanted roles that would challenge me. Nothing excited me then. That is why you didn't see me.

You have worked as a model and you've worked in television serials, music videos and films. Which gives you the most satisfaction?

I have worked in around 200 commercials apart from a few music videos [her most recent video was with Adnan Sami for Tera Chehra].

But films are perfect for me. I enjoy them. I have wanted to be an actress ever since I was a child. They offer you so much variation in characters, such a variety of emotions... There is so much scope for creativity. Films give me the most satisfaction.
