American director Gus Van Sant was awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or for his film Elephant. He also won the award for Best Director.

Elephant looks at what seems to be an ordinary day in the lives of 10 students at an American high school. But it turns out to be far from ordinary, as two cold-blooded killers go on a rampage. Using a cast of mostly unknown actors from Portland, Oregon, the director explores the subject of high-school violence, highlighting lost innocence.

The film draws its inspiration from the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, where two students shot 13 students and teachers dead before killing themselves.
