Kodiyettam (1979)

Sankarankutty is like a leaf on a stream, going where the flow of water takes it; child-like, he is uncaring of both the journey and its destination. Sister Sarojini works odd jobs to support him; the people in the village tolerate him as an amiable eccentric.

A lonely widow takes a purely maternal interest in him, Sankarankutty develops a fondness for her; his sister arranges the marriage. The union, at one level, makes him happy; at another, it leaves him unchanged -- he still roams the village seeking his innocent pleasures, with no thought to his newfound responsibilities.

Disgusted, his pregnant wife leaves him; his sister marries and can no longer pamper him; his estranged wife has an extramarital affair. Sankarankutty is forced to realise childhood does not last forever; he realises he has to grow up and, as he attempts the feat, he realises growing up is hard, and very painful.

Starring: Gopi, Lalita, Kaviyur Ponnamma, Balan K Nair, Thikkurissi and others
