Court summons Salman

April 22, 2003 18:55 IST

A Mumbai sessions court today directed the prosecution to draft charges against Salman Khan in the hit-and-run case registered against him last year.

Khan allegedly drove his vehicle onto a pavement in suburban Bandra on September 28, killing one person and injuring four others. Police alleged that Khan was at the wheel at the time of the accident and was under the influence of alcohol.

The actor has denied the charge.

The prosecution had earlier opposed Khan's plea to drop the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder saying that, prima facie, a case had been made against him. The actor has been booked under section 304-B of the Indian Penal Code, a more serious offence than section 304-A (causing death by negligence).

Khan's lawyer Adik Shirodkar urged the court to drop the charge on the grounds that the actor had no knowledge his driving would result in the death of a person and cause injury to others.

The court has asked Khan to be present for the hearing on April 28.
