The year 2001 gave us neither a Hrithik Roshan nor a Kareena Kapoor.

There were sporadic flashes of talent and charisma in Himanshu Malik (Tum Bin) or Gracy Singh (Lagaan).

But that in-your-face talent, that can't-take-no-for-an-answer screen presence was missing.

Hopefully, the acting talent in the coming months will make us sit up and take notice and watch in gawking disbelief.

Here's looking at 10 promising new faces of 2002.

Esha Deol

First one off the block this year is He-Man Dharmendra and Dream Girl Hema Malini's first born: Esha Deol.

Unlike Hrithik Roshan or Kareena Kapoor whose parents were never major stars, both of Esha's parents were superstars in their time. This could be a liability since expectations of her are sky high. Will Esha be able to live up to them?

On the plus side Esha is an expert dancer—a prominent prerequisite for female stardom. Her lineup of films, handpicked by mom Hema, reveal class and variety. Right after her debut in Vinay Shukla's Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche Esha will be seen with Hrithik Roshan in Arjun Sablok's Na Tum Jaano Na Hum.

Will Esha be the Dream Girl of the new millennium?

Vivek Oberoi

His Christopher Columbus Ram Gopal Varma says Vivek is the most talented newcomer he has ever worked with.

The industry seconds the notion by offering Suresh Oberoi's son the most astonishing lineup of films including Shaad Ali's remake of Mani Ratnam's smash success Alai Payuthey, Rajat Mukherjee's Road and E Niwas's Dum.

All eyes are now on Varma's Company, in which Vivek makes a very unusual debut as a rough mobster. His performance is said to be a knockout.

Lucky Ali

Singer-turned-actor Lucky Ali is all set to make an unexpected debut in Sanjay Gupta's Kaante as a crime dude.

By the end of the year Lucky will also be see as a jealous musician who can't bear to see his shishya [student] successful in Tanuja Chandra's Sur.

With his sensitive face and droopy eyes Lucky could well be the thinking man's Sanjay Dutt.

Sonu Nigam

Hindi film industry has not witnessed a successful singer-turned-actor since Kishore Kumar. This year there are two of them. Besides Lucky, there's Sonu Nigam with his lollypop looks.

Sonu claims to received scores of acting offers, but he is debuting in Raj Kumar Santoshi's Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani where Sonu has Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Manisha Koirala for company.

Amar Upadhyay

If Shah Rukh and Madhavan could graduate so effortlessly from television to the big screen, why not Amar Upadhyay?

Mihir from Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi claims he’s inundated with offers. Strangely like Lucky Ali and Sonu Nigam, Amar has chosen to be one of a clamouring crowd of heroes in JP Dutta’s LoC.

What are the chances of his being noticed among Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Akshaye Khanna, Abhishek Bachchan and Sunil Shetty. For a debutant, presentation is all. Ask Tusshar Kapoor about it.

Yookta Mukhi

Former Miss World Yookta comes to the silver purdah after another beauty queen Diya Mirza came a cropper in 2001.

Suddenly ramp-rompers are no longer seen as boxoffice stompers. Moreover Yookta’s debut film Pyaasa with Aftab Shivdasani and debutant Zulfi Syed hardly looks like a dream vehicle for the ex-Miss World. However let’s be fair to the flair-maiden. The lady does have that namkeen look to be Hindi cinema’s new spice gurgle.

Akansha

She has it in her genes. But can she slip into those slim-legged jeans?

Akansha is the grand daughter of the legendary actress Bina Rai and the intimidating Premnath. Never mind if her dad Prem Kishen missed the bus by many miles. Akansha could be a third-generation winner a la Raj Kapoor’s glorious grand-daughters Karisma and Kareena.

The girl makes her debut with television actor Rahul Bhatt in Umesh Mehra’s Yeh Mohabbat Hai.

Jaya Sheel

Director Hansal Mehta spotted her from afar. He just had to have her in his second film Chhal which is ready for release.

"She’s just so beautiful and so gifted!" raves Hansal about his new discovery.

A trained actress Jaya could be the next actress of that name after Jaya Bhaduri and Jaya Parada to crack the marquee. She’s certainly different from the herd.

Tejaswini Kolhapure

If all had gone well she’s have made her debut in 2001. But Tejaswini’s debut film Paanch where she plays a foul-mouthed rock singer with the morals of an alley cat, got stuck.

Now we shall finally see the highly rated Padmini Kolhapure’s sibling in action. Fiery, tall and talented, Tejaswini has done a short but rewarding stint on television. She could be the non-hyped dark horse of 2002.

Tara Sharma

She said yes to LA director Tabrez Noorani. Then she said no. She said yes to Feroz Khan. Then she said no.

She was selected to be Tusshar Kapoor’s girl attraction in a new film by Tejaa and then relieved of her duties.

She mocked Shah Rukh Khan in the infamous Pepsi ad (the same one where Hrithik was parodied).

What’s it about the well known author commentator and dubbing artiste Partap Sharma’s daughter that makes her so intriguingly mercurial? We shall find out this year.
