Ram Aur Shyam (1967)

What makes Dilip Kumar a legendary figure in Hindi cinema is the fact that with several of his films, he broke new ground in terms of themes, characters and acting methods.

One such trendsetter was Southern director Chanakya's Ram Aur Shyam, which created the 'twins separated at birth' formula, later perfected by Ramesh Sippy in Seeta Aur Geeta.

This film allowed Kumar to explore the full potential of his acting range. At one end of the spectrum is the timid Ram who is terrorised by the villain (Pran), while Shyam is his boisterous, happy-go-lucky antithesis.

The most remarkable aspect of this film's tremendous success was the manner in which its 45-year-old hero dominated the proceedings with boundless energy.
