As the art designer, I have to keep thinking ten years before [Partition] and after," says Sappel. "I did a lot of research about pre-Independence India. I looked into colours, furniture and interior designs of houses then. I studied a lot of my grandparents' photographs in order to gain an insight into their lives."

It took Sappel 12 months to design the sets, complete with storyboards and lighting.
