India's 10 Top Philanthropists

Azim Premji -- but who else? -- tops the revised EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020.

Premji and his family gave away Rs 7,904 crore (Rs 79.04 billion) in philanthropy, up 1,645 per cent!!! over the previous year, according to the list.

HCL founder Shiv Nadar and his family were at the second position with Rs 795 crore (Rs 7.95 billion) in donations.

Mukesh Ambani -- the richest Indian -- and his family gave Rs 458 crore (Rs 4.58 billion), mostly toward disaster relief.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Anil Agarwal, Ajay Piramal, Nandan Nilekani, the Hinduja brothers and Gautam Adani followed them.

Sudhir and Samir Mehta of the Torrent group are in 10th spot with donations of Rs 81 crore (Rs 810 million).

The original list had Rahul Bajaj and family at No 10 with donations of Rs 74 crore (Rs 740 million).

The Bajaj family has now been placed in the 11th position on the revised list.

The Mehtas were the second most generous family in Gujarat after the Adanis, who donated Rs 88 crore (Rs 880 million) mostly towards education.

Other Gujarati families on the list included Cadila Health founder Pankaj Patel (Rs 16 crore/Rs 160 million) donations), Nirma's Karsanbhai Patel and family (Rs 8 crore/Rs 80 million) and Bhadresh Shah and family of AIA Engineering (Rs 6 crore/Rs 60 million).
