India

India is ranked 23rd in the Future Brands' annual country brand index, a comprehensive study of nations based on levels of awareness, familiarity, preference, consideration, advocacy and active decisions to visit.

India has slipped down five places from its perch in 2009, when it stood at 18th position.

Concerns over health and safety were reasons cited by 3,400 business and leisure travellers surveyed from 14 countries across the globe for their preference of nations other than India.

Besides India, other emerging nations such as China and Russia were also down in the Future Brands' country brand index.

China

China was down to 56th position. Perceptions about political freedom, censorship battles with Google and the nation's handling of environmental issues were contributors to China's weak performance this year, the study said.

Russia, on the other hand, had to grapple with issues concerning both political freedom and corruption, the study said.

The three worst performing country brands are Zimbabwe, Iran and Pakistan.

This year's weakest country brands struggle variously with political instability, security concerns, corruption, economic turmoil, natural disasters and high levels of state control, all of which confirm an unavoidable correlation between perceived brand strength and political, social and economic realities in the world's most challenged countries, states the Future Brands study.

United States (Rank 4)

The United States of America has slipped three notches to No. 4 in an annual ranking of nations with the most favourable brand performance, says the Future Brand 2010 study.

US's fall shows the 'Obama effect' can work both ways. While its rise to the top reflected global attention, hope and anticipation of change promised by the new administration, the USA has suffered in parallel with the waning approval ratings of its new President, Future Brands study says.

With unemployment nearing double figures and a slower than predicted recovery, the world's largest economy has also been affected by the Gulf of Mexico disaster and sustained criticism over foreign policy.

The UK suffered as a result of high-risk ventures and the banking collapse.
