India's airlines: Who's making profits, who's losing

With foreign direct investment in aviation being put on hold by the government, there is a high possibility that one or two Indian airlines might not survive the rough weather.

Let us take a look at the carriers and see how much loss or profit they are making.

Air India

Loss (2009-2010): Rs 5,552.44 crore (Rs 55.524 billion)

The airline operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft serving Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

Its corporate office is located at the Air India Building at Nariman Point in south Mumbai. Air India has two major domestic hubs at Indira Gandhi International Airport and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

An international hub at Dubai International Airport is currently being planned.

Kingfisher

Loss (2009-2010): Rs 1,239.3 crore (Rs 12.393 billion)

Its head office is Kingfisher House in Vile Parle (East), Mumbai. Kingfisher Airlines, through its parent company United Breweries Group, has a stake in low-cost carrier Kingfisher Red.

The airline has been facing financial issues for many years.

Jet

Loss (2009-2010): Rs 467.6 crore (Rs 4.67 billion)

Its main hub is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, with secondary hubs at Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

It has an international hub at Brussels Airport, Belgium. Jet Airways is owned by Naresh Goyal.

Loss (2009-2010): Rs 65.5 crore (Rs 655 million)

It operates domestic passenger services to 18 cities with 131 daily flights and about 917 weekly flights.

Its main base is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai.

Profit (2009-2010): Rs 46.2 crore (Rs 462 million)

JetLite, an airline based in Mumbai, is owned by Jet Airways.

The airline operates scheduled services connecting metropolitan centres in India and runs 110 flights daily.

Profit (2009-2010): Rs 67 crore (Rs 670 million)

SpiceJet is a low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, India. It began service in May 2005 and by 2008, it was India's second-largest low-cost airline in terms of market share.

IndiGo

Profit (2009-2010): Rs 484.7 crore (Rs 4.847 billion)

IndiGo is a private, low-cost airline based in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.

Since commencing operations in August 2006, it has established itself as one of India's leading airlines using its model of efficient, low-cost operations and by attracting customers with low fares.
