India, certainly, is a land of diversity. It is here that we have Ferrari FF with a 6262cc engine and also the 623cc Tata Nano.

Among the small segment cars -- starting from 623cc -- the 800cc Maruti's success is legendary.

However, with Maruti deciding to phase out M800, there would be a dearth of entry level small cars in India.

The good news is that at least four new small cars will be here soon.

Even though American car maker General Motors recently said it has shelved plans to launch small car in India that was planned to take on Tata Nano, an 800cc three-cylinder engine is expected to power the new Chevrolet Spark.

GM's small car was looked to be positioned below the company's existing entry level compact car 'Spark'.

The flagship small car 'Spark' comes with a 1,000 cc engine in both petrol and LPG options.

So what about the 800cc car? Sources at GM said the company has powertrain facility that can produce different types of engines.

What triggered the phase out of Maruti 800

Maruti India decided to discontinue Maruti 800 in 11 metros after the Bharat Stage IV pollution norms came into effect in 2010.

Maruti said it was economically unviable to make M800s BSIV complaint.

Moreover, the launch of Tata nano also dashed any hope of the revival of M800.

Maruti 800 will be totally phased out in 2016.
