Hyundai's Grand i10 is a whole new beast

Hyundai India will set the wheels in motion with the launch of the new Grand i10 this festive season. The new hatch is a progeny of the Next-Gen i10 hatch and has been built on the South Korean auto major’s BA platform.

What’s interesting here is that Hyundai has crafted an all-new segment which sits in between the Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20.

The Grand i10 will cater to the consumers of the newly carved segment, a strategy that has been adopted to create interest and sell large numbers in order to dethrone Maruti, the leader in the small car segment.

Hyundai i10 hatch has been one of the stellar cars from the brand garnering around 7,000 units of sale.

When it came to creating a new hatch, no wonder Hyundai chose i10 but the new Hyundai Grand i10 is not an extension of the current Hyundai i10; it is built on the South Korean auto major’s new BA platform.

The new platform has given elongated dimensions to the i10 with increase in wheelbase of 100mm translating into more space in the cabin area with better riding stability.

Where Hyundai i10 was generously sprinkled with the Fluidic technology and comes with peppy new gen appealing exteriors, Hyundai Grand i10 seems to have grown from its precursor and appears to be an upgraded version with matured looks and subtle styling cues along with the Fluidic techs and specs.

The basic differentiation begins with the front fascia only where Hyundai i10 appeared to be a stylish toy with honeycomb lines filling up the trapezoidal grille, the Hyundai Grand i10 offers panache with the horizontal lines, a sign that it has come of age.

The centre piece, including the new chrome radiator grille, features fashionable chrome detailing which appeals to the Indian audience, was missing in the i10 but has found its way in the Grand i10.

The wraparound headlamps of the Grand i10 come in 3D with multi-reflector chrome surround fog lamps from the HID Projector Headlamps with Angel Eye seen in the Next Gen i10.

The front fascia is aggressive, a far ahead move from the cutesy one of the precursor to accommodate the new front grille and the lines and curves have gone subtle and renders less prominence here in the Grand i10 designing.

The side view appears to be more practical and less modern and boasts of the space that the Grand i10 promises to offer, which is a step ahead of what Hyundai rendered to i10. The rear is dramatic from the flat designing of i10 and features roof rails. The lights cluster at the rear end has been newfangled and is now a wraparound which extends deep into shoulders, a far cry from the elongated rear lamps seen in the Hyundai i10.

The Hyundai Grand i10 has been titivated with diamond cut alloy wheels, micro-roof antenna, the body-coloured door handles and the side indicator lights which illuminates the outside rear view mirrors. The bold and curvaceous rear bumper also comes with body coloured inserts as well as rear bumper reflectors and trendy full-wheel covers.

When it comes to interiors, the basic i10 is less spacy; however, Hyundai has taken care of storage as well as comfort of the passengers while adopting the new platform. The Grand Hyundai i10 speaks of more headroom and legroom space and can accommodate five people easily when it comes to short journeys within the city. The instrument panel and use of plastic have gone a notch higher in terms of quality and adds a premium feel to the basic i10.

While adding rear AC vents, a first in segment to feature such an element, Hyundai has also taken care of the short window space at the rear end which was not liked by the consumers in i10.

The Grand Hyundai i10 features a kink in the rear window line after which the glass area edges upward quite like in the Eon but in a more pronounced manner. The dual tone interiors offers an edge with the well lit instrument cluster that houses the new incredibly clear and legible dials that look brilliant when lit. Steering-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth and USB have also come on board.
