Carmaker Maruti has a very important place in the history of the Indian automobile industry.

The carmaker is the undisputed leader of the small car and hatchback segment with almost 50 per cent of the total market share.

But so far the carmaker simply manufactures cars in India and pays several crores as royalty to Suzuki to use its technology.

But recently it was announced that a new R&D centre will be set up at Rohtak in Haryana. It is likely to be completed by 2015 and it will be the first of its kind outside Japan.

The centre would be spread over 700 acres and here Maruti would conceptualise a car that would be totally developed in India.

In other words it will be a totally 'Made in India' product from the Maruti stable.

The step comes as Suzuki's larger strategy to develop and design future models in India. Experts from Japan and India would work together on this project.

According to some media reports some engineers from US auto companies in Detroit have also been recruited to develop this new product.

Maruti Alto

The new K series Alto is available in two variants - Alto K10 LXI and Alto K10 VXI with a price tag of Rs 303,000 - Rs 316,000 (ex showroom Delhi).

This bestseller from Maruti with its new K series engine and some good cosmetic upgrades holds the number one title among entry level hatchbacks.

The new Alto K10 exists along with the older version and it comes with a 1.0L, K10 engine capable of delivering 68PS of maximum power at 6200rpm with 90Nm of maximum torque at 3200rpm.

Maruti A Star

It is powered by a KB series 998cc, three-cylinder, 12 valve, DOHC unit that generates maximum power of 67 PS at 6200 rpm and a top torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm.

Recently, the company also launched the car's automatic transmission version in the market and with this it hinted towards a new trend developing in the automatic hatchback segment.

The car has a four-speed automatic transmission, which promises higher acceleration and performance whereas other variants of the car come with a manual five-speed gearbox.

The KB10 engine of the Maruti A Star is designed to get more power value and nimble acceleration.

The car is priced at Rs 362,556 - Rs 441,800 (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

Maruti Ritz

This car is sold in the western markets under the brand name of Suzuki Splash and in India it is available in both petrol and diesel versions.

The petrol version is powered by a 1.2 L, 1197 cc K -12 series engine.

This K-12 series unit comes with a five-speed manual transmission gearbox and the engine is compatible with BS IV emission standards.

The engine is capable of generating maximum power of 85 PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm.

On the other hand, the diesel version of Ritz is powered by 1.3L, 1248 cc DDiS engine with a five-speed manual transmission gearbox that gives a good mileage and acceleration.

This DDiS engine is fuel efficient and offers 75 PS power at 4000 rpm and a torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Maruti Wagon R

The car is priced at Rs 328,000 - Rs 381,000 and is called the blue eyed boy.

The new Wagon R 2010 has the K10B engine under its hood that gives it 68PS of power and 90Nm of torque.

The new model comes with upgraded features like a new grille, striking headlights and bumpers.

The car's rear has restyled tail lamps and the rear window glass gives the Wagon R a refreshed look.

Then there are the rear wash and wipe and an optional ABS and Airbags in the higher end VXi model.

The dashboard has a new central console which comes with integrated stereo AUX-In for ipod connectivity and larger circular control for the Aircon.

Maruti Swift

The car has waiting period of up to three months and it talks of its popularity in the Indian car market.

The Swift comes in both petrol and diesel versions - 1.2 L, 1197 cc K series petrol engine and 1.3L, 1248 cc DDiS diesel engine.

The K series engine has a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox and it is BS IV compatible.

The diesel version has a multi point common rail fuel injection system which offers better combustion and fuel efficiency.
