WLL mobility base at 1.49 mn

Amid the ongoing controversy on Wireless in Local Loop services, the limited mobility base of BSNL, MTNL and private operators has risen to 1.49 million, as on March 31, 2003 against 660,000 subscribers in the previous month.

As per the subscriber figures released by Association of Basic Telecom Operators on Thursday, the total subscriber base of various basic services - wireline, WLL fixed and WLL mobility was 4.27 million compared to 40.94 million in February this year.

The basic service base of BSNL, MTNL and private operators put together, mopped up a 40.78 million wireline users, 511,000 WLL fixed users and 1.49 million WLL mobility users.

The total base of private basic operators rose to 2.12 million users, which included 1.17 million users of WLL mobility, ABTO claimed.

 This is a sharp rise considering the WLL mobility user base of private operators as on February 28, 2003 was 203,000.

Wireline base of private operators was pegged at 730,000, while that in case of WLL fixed was about 220,000 during the period in reference, ABTO said.

In the limited mobility space, the WLL-M base of Reliance Infocomm was 861,000.

Bharti Telenet Ltd which operates in the circles of Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu had an overall subscriber base of 370,000 user, which include all the three services.

HFCL Infotel, operating in Punjab circle, has notched an overall subscriber base of 111,000, while Shyam Telelink garnered a user base of 82,265 in Rajasthan.

Tata Teleservices user base across Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu was pegged at 365,000, while that of Tata Telesevices  in Maharashtra was 233,000.
