Wipro's Kerala operations begin

January 28, 2005 18:10 IST

IT major Wipro Infotech on Friday started its operations from the Infopark in Kerala, aiming to make its Kochi unit one of its key complexes.

Wipro's main focus would be on very large scale integrated (VLSI) and embedded software technologies and the goal is to build 300-member work force initially, Ramesh N Emani, president, embedded and product engineering solutions, Wipro Technologies, told a press meet in Kochi.

First set of projects had already moved to Kochi and started operations from today and IT experts were actively working on live projects, he said.

Asked if Wipro had plans to shift its BPO operations here, Emani said: "Once we start operations, other units of Wipro, including BPO, will start coming in."

On whether Wipro's foray into the state would throw up more job opportunities for Keralites, he said Kerala was big 'hunting ground' for Wipro. Offers had been made to IT professionals from the state and 'we would give them an option to move to Kochi,' he said, adding that at present 15 professionals from Bangalore had moved to Kochi.
