With George W Bush returning as the US president for the second successive term, Wipro Spectramind, the BPO arm of IT major Wipro Limited, is bullish about growth and adding 1,800 to the existing headcount every month at its facilities.

Chief executive officer of Wipro Spectramind Raman Roy told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of Kolkata Development Centre in Kolkata that "since outsourcing is a major economic decision, it will not be affected on who comes to power. However, continuity definitely has its plusses," Roy said.

Speaking about the growth plans of the company, Roy said that they were in the process of identifying the location for setting up the next development centre, adding that choice of the venue would be either Goa or Coimbatore.

At the end of the last quarter, Spectramind's headcount all over India was 13013, adding the just-opened Kolkata centre was already employing 1000 software professionals to start with.

Asked whether the bandh culture in West Bengal was a major cause for concern for carrying out BPO operations, Roy said this had been a major area for client resistance.

The Kolkata centre has three clients at the moment.

Asked about the nature of BPO operations that Spectramind was involved in, Roy said that it ranged from transaction processes to insurance claims processing and customer servicing.

Roy said that the company hoped to achieve break even by October next year. He hoped that business volumes would pick up in the coming days.

To a question, he said that availability of sufficient number of IT professionals was acting as a constraint in comparison to the demand.

"Give me 3,000 software professionals now, I will hire them tomorrow," Roy said.

Wipro's 7th development center in Kolkata

Wipro Limited opened its seventh software development centre in the country located at Salt Lake electronics complex in the city where both IT and ITeS operations would be carried out.

While inaugurating the centre, chairman of Wipro Azim H Premji said that the company was also looking forward to set up a second centre for which it had already sought 40 acres land from the state government.

With a planned investment of Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion), the centre was currently having a headcount of 1,000, in both BPO and software development operations, adding that it was equipped to house 7,000 once business volumes picked up.

Premji said that Kolkata was an attractive destination for global customers because of its huge talent pool and a supportive government.

He also cautioned that the state should not fall back in putting the necessary infrastructure in place as had happened in some of the south Indian states which had lost incremental business to others.

Premji said that Wipro would continue to make investments in West Bengal.

State chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said that the government would definitely provide land to Wipro for the second centre.

Bhattacharjee said that a new IT park and township would come up in Rajarhat, adding that companies like HSBC, Satyam and Reliance had decided to start operations in Kolkata.
