Ministry urges stricter BIS norms on water

The science and technology ministry has written to the prime minister suggesting that the BIS standards for packaged water 'be set up into more precisely defined and quantitative standards,' the Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

The PMO has referred this letter to the ministry of health for appropriate action, Minister of State for Science and Technology Bachi Singh Rawat said in a written reply.

Besides, the letter also suggested that responsibility needs to fixed at different levels including at the packaging level, standard procedures for monitoring quality must be set up and correct labelling techniques evolved, the minister said.
