VSNL forms subsidiary in US to tap IP-VPN market

June 26, 2003 19:12 IST

The telecommunications and Internet services provider Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd has formed a fully owned subsidiary in the US, VSNL America Inc, to offer the Internet protocol-virutal private network solutions in that country.

"The subsidiary, set up in Delaware, would provide IP-VPN solutions to begin with and later offer a host of other services," sources close to the development said in Mumbai on Thursday.

VSNL America would help in roping in the US-based companies, the sources added.

The Tata Group company would also invest in setting up points of presence in the US and Europe, enabling it to provide connectivity between these nations and the Indian sub-continent, they said.

This would be the company's third international venture, the earlier being United Telecom Ltd in Nepal and VSNL Lanka Ltd in Sri Lanka.

UTL, which is expected to be launched shortly, is a joint venture with Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd, Telecom Consultants India Ltd and Nepal Ventures Pvt Ltd to provide WLL-based services in the Himalayan country.

It would also provide national and international long distance services.

VSNL had recently received the external gateway operator licence from the Telecom Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, against a fee of $50,000.

The licence would enable VSNL to offer ILD voice and data services and help it tap 400 million minutes of ILD traffic in the island nation.
