Videocon Communication, a part of the Videocon Group, has changed its name to Trend Electronics with effect from May 1, 2007.

In a communiqué to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Rs 700-crore company said the Registrar of Companies, Maharashtra, approved the name change.

Venugopal Dhoot, chairman, Videocon Group, said the name change was effected to avoid confusion among the shareholders, as they could mistake Videocon Communication with the group's flagship, Videocon Industries.

"Videocon Communications is a relatively small enterprise worth about Rs 700 crore. In comparison, the group turnover is Rs 9,000 crore. We have changed the name to avoid confusion among the shareholders," said Dhoot.

Videocon Communications is engaged in the manufacture and export of consumer electronics.

The flagship, Videocon Industries, operates within a wide variety of sectors ranging from consumer durables to oil and gas and colour picture tube glass.

Videocon Communications posted net sales of Rs 209 crore for the quarter ended March 31. The total income from operations was Rs 2,197.45 crore for the same quarter.

Given the difference in scale, it is understandable that promoters are keen on avoiding confusion with regard to the two companies, said analysts.

Apart from Videocon Industries and Videocon Communications, the group has two other listed companies, Videocon Appliances and Videocon International. Videocon International was merged with Videocon Industries last year.

Dhoot did not say if he would look at renaming his appliances company in the future.

Analysts add that Trend Electronics could be the holding company for Videocon's electronics and durables retail venture Next.

However, there was no confirmation from the company executives.
