Faced with an unprecedented bear run, the consumer electronics industry is planning to pull out all stops in generating sales during the upcoming festival season, with heavy discounts, freebies, bundling offers and even dealer junkets.

Videocon International has decided to fly 1,000 dealers to the United States for a holiday, provided they have done business with it worth Rs 500,000. Onida is offering up to Rs 1,000 reduction on certain colour television models to boost sales. LG Electronics is planning a slew of new launches during this period.

"We have already introduced a pricing initiative by offering 3-5 per cent price reduction on CTVs. For example, a 21-inch flat is available for Rs 1,000 less," Onida C Mouli, vice-president (marketing), told PTI in New Delhi on Wednesday.

V N Dhoot, chairman, Videocon International, said, "We have decided to take 1,000 of our dealers to the US this time. This gives a big boost to trade."

Suresh Khanna, secretary general, Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association, outlines the importance of the coming months: "The CTV industry has been able to sell only about 4.3 million units this year; to meet the 8 million unit target, the same number will have to be sold over the next three months."

However, while many manufacturers say the consumers have tired of discounts and freebies, these remain the time-tested methods of boosting sales and even advancing purchases.
