Which stocks to buy, hold and sell

July 31, 2008 09:18 IST
After Tuesday's mayhem, traders on Wednesday had lots to cheer with Sensex closed 496 points at 14,287.

The Sensex opened with a huge postive gap and has maitained it through the day. Nifty too closed in the positive region.

In such volatile times, what strategy should you adopt? Which stocks to buy, sell and hold?

Stock market expert Pranav Sanghavi answers a few such queries...

PRANAV SANGHAVI says, Hello and good afternoon to everyone. Welcome to the chat, let's begin.

Sameer asked, Hi Pranav, I bought 20 bajaj hodling & investment shares at about Rs 740, It is currently trading at Rs 350. Though there are couple of good rallies in the share market, the shares of bajaj holding & Investment not at all moving forward compared to other frontline stocks. Do i need to hold it till it reaches those high level?. I bought the shares when it was named as "Bajaj auto". Please advice. Thanks
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers,  at 2008-07-30 15:51:48Just today there was a review of the stock on a news channel. You would have to hold on for a long time to see your price levels.
SRR asked, hi, I invested in follwong growth MFs. DSP ML T.I.G.E.R FUND, ICICI PRUDENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE FUND, KOTAK OPPORTUNITIES. Please advice me whether these funds are good investment for handsome returns 3 to 5 years period. Shall i buy more units in these funds or buy other diversified funds. Please suggest. Thanks
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, DSP Tiger especially has given stellar performance over the last few years. I would surely hold on to the fund. If you are investing with a 3 to 5 year outlook you will surely see decent profit in that time frame.
riyas asked, Hi Pranav, Are you bullish on IDFC, Varun shipping, Canara Bank, Jindal saw,Pantaloon Retail stocks. If yes, shall i buy these shares at 1 to 2 years outlook. Thanks

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think you have asked way too many companies in one single question. I am afraid it won't be possible for me to give advice on that many stocks in one chat session as it won't be fair to other persons having posted queries.
Prabhu asked, Hi, I like to buy RPL, SAIL, NTPC, Sterlite. Shall i buy at CMP. I like to buy 100 shares each and can hold it for 1 year period. Please advice.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could have bought a small part of your total invesment plan on a day like yesterday when the markets were down by 500 odd points rather than a day like today where the markets are up by 500 points. Also, buy in parts and not at one go and most importantly buy it for 1 year and over only. I would still wait for a downward correction before jumping in.
Sid asked, should i hold BHEL 21 shares @ 1800
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes I would surely hold on.
Nikhil asked, What are the future prospects for ICICI bank,DLF?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Despite the negative scenario for banks currently, I think ICICI bank will surely come out tops over a longer term. If you can look at the stock with a 1 to 2 year outlook then you can surely look at the stock. But buy on downswings in parts rather than at one go.
mintoo asked, plz tell me future or rpl. i have 3000 share or rpl @ 200
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Once the commercial production starts sometime this year or early next year the stock should see some jump in its price. You should be able to exit with a decent profit at that time.

vaishali asked, which shares will be good in near future according to you, i m confused about what to buy?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you are convinced that you will see higher levels on the index in the coming months then you should look at the frontline index stocks like RIL, L&T etc. They are the ones that will bounce back first if the index rises.
anshul asked, hi i have SBI @1610 and SBI@ 1079 wat shuold i do shuold i wait or sell?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Your average rate is around the CMP. I would wiat for a while as I am pretty sure you will see a decent profit over 6 to 12 month period.

What do you think the prospects are for this. when should i sell. i have 50 shares of reliance power @ 156, what should be the target for this. I am looking at medium term profits for all my shares. Thanks anup
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Rajesh Exports you could look at booking profits and swithcing. R Power is surprisingly being added to the index stocks. It has yet to have a plant commissioned and it is being added to the index stocks. So the stock may get some boost by this virtue. Besides that the stock doesn't look to jump up till its plants are up by 2010. R Power is surely not a medium term buy.
brijinder asked, I am a fresher. I want to buy a few stocks. Kindly guide which would be the best to buy ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Stick with the index stocks. Buy in small parts and only on dips in the index. Do not buy when the markets are up.
SUSHIL asked, I BOUGHT L&T @ 2700 SHOULD I HOLD?

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could surely look at NTPC with a medium to long term outlook.
satish asked, which reality share is good to buy for short and long term ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I don't think you can look at realty stocks with a short term outlook. You could look at stocks like DLF, Unitech and even niche players like Orbit but only with a long term outlook.
LGANAPATHY asked, Hi Pranav, I have 1000 Nos IFCI bought at Rs.91/-. Can hold or sell? Advice. Also advice on Tata Teleservices?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, It looks very difficult at this stage for the stocks to reach those levels very soon. You could book a marginal loss on a rally and switch to a quality growth stock.
pranav asked, Please tell me your views on the future of telecom stocks i have rcom 100 shares @ 700
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Most of the telecom stocks have postedstellar results barring say Idea. Bharti posted extremely positive results. I am bullish on RCom also but only with a long term outlook.

MANN asked, What is near future prospect of HCC?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They have some very interesting projects nearing completion. Their Lavassa project which is a large township development near Pune which though is in partnership should yeild some good returns to the company over the next few years. I would look at the stock with a 2 year outlook.
atul_akbari@rediffmail.com asked, what is downside index and upside index for the year
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, We have already seen a sub 13,000 index and on the top side we have seen around 18,000.
I think that is pretty much a broad range that the index could move in.
prasenjit asked, I want to buy the following stock. Please suggest wheather I buy them at current price or in some dip xl technology tata steel mangalore ref hdfc bank reliance power rpl powergrid reliance capital reliance communication rnrl LICHF

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, A lot of companies offer stock options to their employees as a benefit. The rate at which they are issued are almost always at a discount to the market. If they are stock options, I don't think you could be entitled to them.
Chetan asked, i am looking forward to buy some shares of education sector. Can you suggest me some good companies where i can invest?

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would surely continue to hold on. The stock has given phenominal returns over the last few years. The stock is currently quoting cum bonus and I would surely hold on with a long term outlook.
lob asked, How about buying NTPC,BHEL AND L&T at current levels ?

murali asked, Is Madras cements a good buy especially with a 1:1 bonus and stock split waiting to happen. How about teledata with an EPS of 13.05 and a price of 15.5. Why is this share languishing at such levels. Is Cipla a good buy at this level. What about tea stocks. Is there an upswing expected in tea stocks?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I like all the stocks that you have mentioned. Teledata had announced a demerger and the shareholders were to receive some free stocks. But I am not sure they have allotted the shares already. The pharma sector has outperformed the markets by correcting at a lower rate than the markets. So you could look at the stock.

fsgsfg asked, Hi L&T 70 shares at 3336, should i hold or sell
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You have got in very close to its previous highs. I would hold on as you shall be reducing costs through the 1:1 bonus issue.
AshishSG asked, How is Dena Bank Script from 1 yr prospective ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, With the banking scenario looking a bit weak in the short term with the hikes in CRR and Repo rate. I would only sticks with the frontline leading banks like HDFC, ICICI and SBI. Although Dena has a decent balance sheet and an attractive PE ratio, in the short term I would not look at it.
manoharan asked, Can we start now stock picking or else we may miss the opportunity –your valuable guidance please
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You can buy quality stocks in small parts but only on major dips like yesterday.
