March 27, 2008 09:18 IST

Volatility ruled the markets on Wednesday, with the Sensex swinging between positive and negative region.

What strategy should the investors follow? Is this the right time to buy stocks? If so, which stocks and sectors should you concentrate on?

In an hour-long chat on rediff.com on Wednesday, market expert Pranav Sanghavi answered many such readers' queries. Here is the transcript:

PRANAV SANGHAVI says,
Good evening and welcome to the chat. Let's begin.

bal123 asked, Hi pranav, i have 100 andhrabank@83,50DLF@764,200ucobank@50,50vijayabank@67,110 GMR infra@166,150@ispat@43,25indianOil@505,100nag fert@41,40rnrl@142,50relpetrol@180,50ntpc@232,I am a long term investor,i request you to tell, which stocks should i hold which i have to sell and which i have to buy
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers,  at 2008-03-26 15:54:32You being a long term investor you could hold on to most of the stocks that you have mentioned barring a few like RNRL, Ispat etc.You would have to hold them for atleast 6 to 12 months atleast.
panjal asked, hi pranab,i have 200 shares of rolta.what is the prospect
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Rolta could be looked at with a very long term view. In the short term you may not see too much appreciation in the stock.
yes asked, how is the future of mundra port and suzlon.in recent times the prices is coming down.I have planned for holding these for long term.Your suggestion ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, It is a infrastructure stock and all infrastructure stocks have tubled in the recent corrections and sharply at that. It would betake the company time before it gets fully operational and therefore you would have to wait for some time.
khk asked, Hi Pranav, I hold 7000 shares of Pochiraju Industries @40/-. I'm a long term investor (1-2 years). What is your call on this?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I am sorry I don't follow that stocks so would not be able to help you.
Laxman asked, Hi Pranab, I have 50 RCOM@ 490 , 100 rec@105 , 20 icici bank @790 and 100 Aries agro. hich ones shld i hold n which ones shld i sell?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could surely hold on to RCom, ICICI Bank from the stocks you've mentioned.
Tirthankar asked, Hi Pranab I have 255 shares of Clutch Auto @125. Hold or Sell for the same
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you are a long term investor I would hold on to the auto component company. If the interest do go down over the next 9 to 12 months then auto companies and auto component manufacturers would benefit from the same.
ysrinivas asked, kindly advise which stocks to buy in the range of arounnd 100-200 value in terms of long term investment in the current trend
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would surely look at IDFC, NTPC, Power Grid, Praj Ind, ITC, Indian Hotels etc.
Bharat asked, What is your take on Reliance Power?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I think Rel Power will take some time to move up. It does not have a single plant up an running so the stock looked over valued to be valued against it's earning 5 years in the future.
Bhoomi asked, How are the prospects of subex, chambal, parsoli
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Chambal Fert should benefit from the Budget which favors the farming sector and also the fertilizer sector.
kiran asked, I have 100 SaharaHousing got @ seventy rs hold or sell. Please suggest
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You would have to hold with a 2 to 3 year outlook.
mirza asked, I hav 50 rcom at 720, 100 natps at 202, 25 icici at 1080, and other but most tragic is rdb industries 100 of rs 280
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Rdb I don't follow but Rcom, ICICI should not be a problem to hold on to. You will see your prices in the future.
GURUPRASAD asked, I WANT TO INVEST IN EQUITY, IS IT RIGHT TIME? WHICH STOCK WE CAN BUY
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The markets could correct a bit more. One should not get euphoric over the rise in the last couple of days. You still have to tread carefully and pick quality stocks with high growth rates in profit. I still maintain that you could look at buy small parts on days of large corrections in the index. You could look at SBI, L&T, DLF, IDFC, HDFC Bank etc.
PPatel asked, hi Pranav, I have purchased Hindalco 275@Rs.185.29, RPL 75@Rs.175, SIEMENS 50@Rs.784 and ICICI 60@Rs.868.61. Should I hold these stocks long term. Your suggestion please.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You have a good mix of stocks and I would surely recommend a hold. In the long term you will see decent profits.
Bhoomi asked, what are the prospects of Bharti, BHEL, MAHINRA AND MAHINDRA, TATA MOTORS, MARUTI?Can they be bought at current levels?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would wait for the March end results of the Auto stocks and maybe one more quarter to see if there is a decline in sales growth. If the interest rate is dropped then one can surely look at them. BHEL and Bharti are also good picks but need to be held for 3 to 6 months from current levels.
mkb asked, Hello Pranab! I have SRF @ 150 and Royal Orchid Hotels @ 120. At present time, should I purchase more at prices below 100? or should I quit them? Tata steel is good to have this time?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would not recommend averaging at this stage. You can continue holding SRF surely, as for the Royal Orchid you could look at better hotel stocks like IH at current levels.
manoj asked, Hallow What are future prospects of siemens
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, In the long term the heavy engineering stocks should surely do well especially the impetus given to infrastructure in the Union Budget this year.
inder asked, Kindly advise which stocks to hold and which to sell. I have Dlf @606 , powergrid@130 , Punj Llyod @ 303, Sail @189,Gujarat Nre coke @129,fortis healthcare @74.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would hold on to all barring maybe Fortis.
Shailesh asked, i have bombay dyeing 300shares@ 675
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They have plans of developing real estate in the greater Mumbai region. When that actually happens and if the real estate market is still bouyant then Bombay Dyeing could benefit immensely from the developments. But if there is a marginal correction in the real estate market and a general slack then it would take longer for the company to reap benefits.
nitin asked, Hi Pranav I have 100 JaiCorp@1,157 and i am in massive lossess due to this script. It showed some signs of recovery today and yesterday... Should i book loss or will it recover?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Jai Corp always looked like a trader/operator stocks with it having touched phenomenal highs in a very short span. Whether there is a 100% subsidiary which hold a SEZ project on the outskirts of Mumbai still has to be confirmed. But with the real estate markets looking to go in for a correction the stock may take some time to recover.
Milind asked, What are your views (short- medium-long term) on Gateway Distripark)??
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I am not too bullish on the stock. I'd rather look at other real estate stocks like Unitech, DLF and GMR.
chintan asked, I want to invest again into share market.. which share at present level do u want me to invest... I prefer RNRL, RPL, Ispat, nagarjun Fert., Vijaya Bank what do u say
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would not look at these stocks in these volatile times. The stocks you mention are fancied by traders and they have corrected over 50% from their previous highs.
naveen asked, i have taken 150 shares of NTPC at 282 150 Powergrid @ 142 can i get any profit in this year?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could see profit but you would need to hold on for 6 to 12 months atleast.
SOURABH asked, HIII SIR,HOW R U....................I HAVE 1000 SHARES OF RPL @222.WHEN IT GIVE GOOD RETURN OR PLZ TELL ME WHEN UPTO HOLD THAT SHARE...........
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Till the RPL refinery starts its commercial production you won't see a massive rally in the stock. You would have to wait till the company's refinery gets operational.
chatking asked, Hi pranav, shld i buy sesagoa & concor at curr prices ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I had recommended Sesa in previous chats when it was hovering around 2100 at the time of the Jan correction. If it comes down to 2400 to 2500 levels I would look at the stock again. ConCor also I would prefer to wait for further downside or the markets to stabilize before looking
at the stock.
mkb asked, Should I go for MF (Reliance Regular Saving Fund)? for long term (>5 yrs)
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you are investing regulary in SIP type FUND with a long term outlook then you could surely look at it.
RAVINDRA asked, I have 100 shares of Reliance power purchased @ 462 Kindly advice me to hold it or sale>
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, It will take a long time to reach the rates that you have bought at.
shashi asked, is it hold for long term these stocks power grid,NTPC, granules & Dagger forst , hexaware
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Yes you can hold on to them with a long term outlook. Hexaware could be switched to a quality growth stock.
tina25_bhagat asked, I have shares in my portfolio NTPC@230 Reliance petro @ 200 power grid @ 125 RNRL @ 120 GMR @ 175 naga ferti @ 50 ispat @ 50 varun shipp @ 75 dena \ vijay \ syndicate\ allahabad bank which share i have to sell out
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would hold on to most barring Ispat and RNRl. The other stocks could be held with atleast a 6 month outlook.
anirudh asked, valecha engineering @ 320/- hold or sell? when can i see my purchase price?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, They have some expansion plans on hand but you would have to wait for a while before seeing your purchase price.
streecat asked, Hi Pranva, What is your say on the bourses? It had shown signs of recovery yesterday but today a bit down.Your advice on whether to sell once the market starts to pick up. I had purchased a few L&T just before the big fall. Should I hold on to L&T or sell immediately once the market picks up. Thank you in advance
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The markets look to remain volatile in the short term. After a consolidational phase they may move up depending on the corporate performance and global economic scenario. L&T could surley be held.
Kapil asked, Hi, I hold 15 BHEL @ 2215/-. Should I hold for future or sell off. Also, what is you take on construction shares. So you think current pricing of punj lloyd is good to buy or should we wait?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You have got in to BHEL at a high price. You will have to hold on to see a decent profit. Bhel has been performing consistently in the past and looks to continue doing so.
asrikanth asked, hi pranav i have 970 shares of dena bank what to do? bought@71
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, The price has come off by over 30%. I would still continue holding on to the stock. If you can buy more at lower levels you would see profit faster.
Satish asked, Pranav, I have Parsvanath developers at 450, Praj at 260.. what should i do with these stocks?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I have never like Parsvnath and have never recommended the same on my chats. I still don't like the stock too much and witht he realty stocks taking a massive hit so has Parsvnath. I don't see it scaling new highs soon. Praj on the other hand has also corrected sharply but it has a strong business which looks to grow at over 25% YOY basis. So I would hold on.
phani asked, I have gmrinfra130@164,ashok leyland300@32 and aban offshore10@2850 ,please let me know for what time frame can i hold on these stocks.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You would have to look at a time frame of 6 to 12 months.
Bhoomi asked, WHICH IS THE BEST AMONG MOTILAL OSWAL, RELIGARE AND EDELWEISS AND FUTURE CAPITAL.WHAT ABOUT MUNDRA PORT?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I like the work model of Edelweiss from all the stocks that you havementioned. I am not too bullish on Mundhra Port.
asd asked, Is Container Corp and Dredging Corp good buys for medium term
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I like Dredging Corp especially. Dredging industry had received some push from the government in the previous budget and I don't think they have been pulled out. So you could look at the stock with a long term outlook.
anand asked, Hi pranav..I have 100 gmr@210. what should i do ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Hold, although it is expensive on an EPS basis, you should see your price within 12 months as they keep completing and delivering large scale projects.
Dheeraj asked, Hi Pranav, this is Dheeraj,I would like to buy RNRL,Ultratech Cements,RPL. is this the right time to buy.I am planning to invest for long term.
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would look at Ultra tech but on corrective days. RPL is a long term bet and you would have to wait for the refinery to get commissioned.
arunlondhe asked, How come all the experts on TV, who were saying sensex will hit 25K all, are now saying that we are in the bear phase ?? What about the long term india growht story ?? Are we in for a slow down ?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, India as a country looks to grow its GDP by over 7.5% which is a very handsome growth rate as compared to say US which is expected to grow at 0.5% this year. But US also is a huge market as compared to India and if they go into a recessionary phase then all global markets including India will surely get affected if only marginally. So till we see signs of our corporate profit growth heading southwards, we should not see a major slowdown in our economy.
anand asked, Hi pranav..I have 100 rajesh exp at 150 and ttml at 54 what should i do ????
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Exit on rallies and switch to quality frontline stocks.
anand asked, Hi pranav..I have 100 rajesh exp at 150 and ttml at 54 what should i do ????
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Rajesh is a Bangalore based jewellery exporter but its margins as compared to it's turnover are very marginal. So I am not too bullish on the stock although they do plan to set up a retail chain in India.
vin asked, i want to purchase rpl,NTPC,JP ASSO.,JAI CORPORATION,TTML Is it Right time to buy for time horizon min. 5 yrs or i should wait to purchase

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you do wish to enter them pick stocks which have a strong running business and not who are promising earning in the future. Also picks stocks who have performed well over the last 2-3 quarters.
Amit asked, Hi Pranav, What your thoughts on Suzlon and RPL. What is the future of these in 6 months to a year from now. Thanks

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You will have to hold them for 6 to 12 mionths. You should see decent profits in both stocks.
Bhoomi asked, can tata tele mharashtra be bought at current levels?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, I would not look at the stock. I had also mentioned in the bouyant times of Nov & Dec to book profits an exit. I am still not bullish on the stock.
anchal asked, Should I buy Unitech now and if yes at what price?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, Unitech in its downtrend has corrected over 50%. I would surely look at it on dips with a 1 year outlook.

PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, If you can hold for one year yes.
sandip asked, I'm Having some 2200 shares of spicejet @ 59.. Please suggest if its better to hold or book loss ..
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You will have to hold. Spice could be an acquisition target as I feel the airline business will see further consolidation like the Jet/Sahar and Kingfisher/Air Deccan mergers.
Rehan asked, Sir what is the fair price to accummulate Gujarat NRE Coke?
PRANAV SANGHAVI answers, You could look at it from current levels and on every dip. Buy in small parts of the total quantity you wish to acquire.
