Trains may run on CNG soon

December 23, 2005 16:01 IST
Indian Railways have developed and tested a kit with which diesel engines can run on CNG, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

Disclosing this, Minister of state for Railways R Velu said in a written reply that trials of commercial service on one diesel multiple unit rake has recently commenced.

Unlike conventional engines, it works on dual fuel, the load cycle is partially on diesel and partially on compressed natural gas.

Operational costs with a duel fuel engine are expected to cost 25 per cent less than diesel based multiple units, he said adding that it is premature to quantify savings, precisely.
