In a bid to make further inroads in the global market, Tata Motors on Tuesday unveiled the 'Xover', a crossover vehicle concept, showcasing the company's commitment to innovate and gear up for newer technologies.
Presenting the vehicle at the 75th Geneva Auto Show, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata said it represented the company's idea of a modern crossover, a strong emerging segment globally.
"The Tata Xover demonstrates Tata Motors' desire and commitment to innovate and address new market segments", Tata said.
This is the eighth straight year for Tata Motors, the flagship company of the $14.3 billion Tata Group, at the Auto Show where it shares space with bigwigs like General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Honda and BMW.
About 900 brands from over 30 countries are displaying products and launch of new models and unveiling of futuristic concept cars is expected at the event which ends March 13.
Tata Motors' is also displaying its hatchback 'Indica', SUV 'Safari' and 'Indigo' Station. The company is actively looking at increasing export of these cars to European and other overseas markets.
It sells the hatchback 'Indica' in product agreement with MG Rover under the 'City Rover' brand in Europe.
Last week, the company announced entry into the Turkish market with the launch of 'Indica', just months after officially introducing the hatchback in South Africa.
The 'Tata Xover' blends the benefits of a family-friendly luxury vehicle with refined driving dynamics and the visual cues of an activity-oriented sports utility vehicle.
A 4.85 metre car, it uses a rugged frame-based design with large interior space and flexible seating that can comfortably accommodate up to seven adults and ample cargo area.
Configured to be fitted with a range of Euro IV engines, including Tata Motors' own next generation power-trains, the car would offer traction control, climate control with personalised zones, navigation system, anti-lock braking system, among other comfort, convenience and safety options.
Sporting 17-inch wheels, the car promises superior ride-comfort and handling by carrying independent double wishbone coil spring suspension with a stabiliser bar in front and a five-link suspension with coil springs and stabiliser bar at the rear.
Apart from passenger cars, Tata Motors is also expanding its commercial vehicle operations, which not only includes tapping newer markets but overseas acquisitions as well.
Last year, the company bought South Korea's Daewoo Commercial Vehicles for over $300 million. With this deal, they got ready access to the multi-axle Heavy Commercial Vehicles and ability to compete with global giants like Volvo.
It has also acquired 21 per cent stake in Spain's Hispano Carrocera for about $12 million.
