The Department of PostsĀ on Monday launched a 'One India one rate scheme' for sending speed posts across the country at a uniform rate.

Under the scheme, speed post letters weighing 50 grams or less could be sent to anywhere in the country for Rs 25.

However, rates for local posts remain same, an official release said.

"The scheme would make speed posts more convenient and affordable of customers," Postal Department Secretary Jyotsana Diesh said.

The plan has been launched to commemorate 20 years of the existence of speed post.

"Our commercial clients were demanding a discount on rates. This scheme will help them as well," she said.

"Of course, it is for our retail customers and there are no ceiling on the number of articles sent. A person can send one letter too in this scheme. But, it makes more of a difference to our commercial clients like Banks and other financial institutions as they send articles in bulk," Post Master General-Delhi Meera Handha said.

In 2005-06, Speed Post revenue crossed Rs 408 crore (Rs 4.08 billion) and the department has targeted Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) for current fiscal.
