2014 VW Polo facelift launched at Rs 4.99 lakh

VW India has launched the Polo facelift in the country with prices starting at Rs 499,000.

The refresh brings to the Polo a new front grille, a new front bumper with chrome foglamps and cornering lights, new headlamps, a new rear bumper with a larger license-plate carrier and reflectors, new wheel covers or new 15-inch alloy wheels (depending on the variant) and a new body colour.

VW Polo 1.2 MPI: 1,198 cc 3-cyl engine with 75 PS (73.94 bhp) @ 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm of torque @ 3,750 rpm and 5MT. ARAI efficiency is at 16.47 kmpl

VW Polo 1.5 TDI: 1,498 cc 4-cyl engine with 90 PS (88.73 bhp) @ 4,200 rpm and 230 Nm of torque between 1,500-2,500 rpm with 5MT. ARAI efficiency is at 20.14 kmpl

VW Cross Polo: Identical to Polo 1.5 TDI

VW Polo GT TDI: 1,498 cc 4-cyl engine with 105 PS (103.52 bhp) @ 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque between 1,500-2,500 rpm with 5MT. ARAI efficiency is at 19.91 kmpl

Apart from getting a brand new 1.5-litre diesel engine, the Polo facelift has cosmetic upgrades. Here is a visual comparison of the new and the old car.

The front fascia of the new Polo has undergone minor changes like receiving a new grille which has two black horizontal slats underlined by a single chrome member compared to the old car’s triple chrome slat design.

The bumper has been reprofiled to accommodate a wider secondary airdam and a new chrome insert runs across the width of the bumper, cradling the revised foglamps.

The headlamp clusters now house dual barrel elements and static cornering lights.

The profile of the car remains unchanged except for the new alloy wheel design. The Polo facelift introduces a new orange colour option.

Coming to the rear, the changes are limited to the new bumper which has reflectors on either side and a redesigned license plate enclosure.

Inside, the new car’s flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel is the most significant change.

The silver insert on the centre console is another noticeable visual change to the dashboard and the multi-info display nested within the instrument console adopts a different font.

The seat fabric is mildly different, the rear headrests wrap around the seat back to become shorter, while the rest of the interior continues untouched.

Here is a technical specification comparison of the VW Polo, Maruti Swift and the Hyundai i20, the three highest selling premium hatchbacks in the country.

The VW Polo facelift gets a new 1.5-litre diesel engine which puts it right on top of the power chart along with the i20 (1.4-litre), at 90 PS (88.7 bhp).

The Swift is powered by a 75 PS (73.9 bhp) 1.3-litre engine. The refreshed Polo delivers the highest torque in its class at 230 Nm while the Swift generates the least at 190 Nm. The i20 offers a twist force of 220 Nm.

The Polo and the Swift employ a 5-speed manual transmission while the i20 boasts of a 6-speed manual unit.

In terms of efficiency (ARAI figures), the Swift tops the list at 22.9 kmpl, the i20 follows at 21.9 kmpl and the Polo facelift finishes last at 20.14 kmpl.

The Polo facelift with a starting price of Rs 6.27 lakh is the most expensive premium hatchback while the Swift which starts at Rs 5.45 lak is the most affordable car.

The i20, is middling again, starting at Rs 5.94 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi).

The Polo facelift retains the 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine and the 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI. The Swift and the i20 are powered by 1.2-litre four-cylinder units.

Among the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre models, the Swift is the most powerful with an output of 87 PS (85.7 bhp) while the Polo finishes at the bottom with 75 PS (73.9 bhp) on tap. The i20 1.2-litre generates 84 PS (82.8 bhp).

In addition to the sub-4 metre-compliant motor, the i20 also comes with a bigger 100 PS (98.5 bhp) 1.4-litre petrol engine.

The Polo GT TSI develops a class-leading 105 PS (103.5 bhp). The i20 1.4-litre comes mated only to a 4-speed AT and the Polo GT TSI comes mated only to a 7-speed DSG while the rest of the cars in the comparo are equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions.

The Polo GT TSI generates highest torque of 175 Nm, the i20 1.4-litre puts out 136 Nm while the i20 1.2-litre and the Swift deliver an identical 114 Nm. The normal Polo 1.2 offers the least torque at 110 Nm.

The Swift returns the highest ARAI certified fuel economy of 18.6 kmpl, closely followed by the i20 1.2-litre at 18.5 kmpl. The Polo and the i20 1.4-litre deliver 16.47 kmpl and 15 kmpl respectively.

Just like the diesel variants, the Polo has the highest starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh while the Swift emerges as the least expensive car at Rs 4.42 lakh.

The Hyundai i20 1.4-litre AT which is not eligible for the excise duty concession retails at Rs 7.76 lakh.

The VW Polo GT TSI which is priced at Rs 7.99 will be available only from September (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi).
