The rankings will be based on a survey, Swachh Sarvekshan, to be conducted between January 5-20 and likely to be released by the government on January 25.
As many as 75 cities will be ranked in terms of cleanliness and sanitation next month as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.
The aim is to foster a spirit of competition among cities to improve cleanliness and sanitation.
The urban development ministry, the nodal body for Swachh Bharat, has asked the Quality Council of India to conduct nationwide rankings of the 75 cities.
This would include state capitals and 53 cities with a population of 10 lakh (1 million) each.
The rankings will be based on a survey, Swachh Sarvekshan, to be conducted between January 5-20 and likely to be released by the government on January 25.
“Under Swachh Sarvekshan, we will be ranking 75 cities, essentially with a population of over 10 lakh, on sanitation, cleanliness and hygiene parameters.
"We will scale up the survey next year to cover 500 cities and further to 4,041 cities in the subsequent year,” said R P Singh, secretary-general, QCI.
/p>The evaluation will focus on essentially six broad areas -- strategy for open defecation free town and integrated solid waste management; information, education and behaviour change communication activity; door-to-door collection, sweeping, collection and transportation; processing and disposal; public and community toilet provision and individual toilets.
The survey would confirm the work done on the construction of household individual toilets and community toilet seats, door-to-door collection of garbage and waste management and its treatment.
The door-to-door collection, sweeping, collection and transportation segment will carry the highest weight of 40 per cent in the ranking, while processing and disposal will carry a 20 per cent weight.
