Sensex ends up 341 points, Tata Steel gains 7%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 209 points at 16,817. More buying in morning deals saw the index rally past the 17,000-mark to a high of 17,141.

After dropping to a low of 16,726 in noon deals on profit-taking, the Sensex finally ended with a gain of 341 points at 16,949. The NSE Nifty moved up 91 points to 4,929.

The BSE market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,741 stocks traded, 1,909 declined, 798 advanced and 34 were unchanged on Wednesday.

INDEX MOVERS...

Tata Steel gained 6.7% to Rs 758. ITC advanced 6% to Rs 196.

BHEL moved up 5.5% to Rs 1,982, and HDFC Bank added nearly 5% to Rs 1,467.

HDFC was up nearly 4% at Rs 2,725. ACC advanced 3.7% to Rs 745, and ICICI Bank added 3.3% to Rs 1,099.

Tata Motors, SBI and Satyam surged nearly 3% each to Rs 714, Rs 2,117 and Rs 433, respectively.

DLF, Reliance and Ambuja Cements gained 2.7% each at Rs 815, Rs 2,387 and Rs 116, respectively.

Cipla dropped 3.7% to Rs 179.

Reliance Communications slipped 3% to Rs 558, and Wipro dropped 2.8% to Rs 410.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance Power topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 531 crore followed by Jaiprakash Assocciates (Rs 429.50 crore), Reliance (Rs 349.50 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 320.80 crore) and Tata Investment Corporation (Rs 300.50 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.72 crore shares followed by Jaiprakash Assocciates (1.59 crore), Reliance Power (1.52 crore), Reliance Petroleum (1.12 crore) and Cords Cable (1.05 crore).
