Sensex up 4 points at 11,149

The markets were rangebound but did not witness any major downfall defying global trend. Asian markets closed down and the European markets also opened weak ahead of the big event lined up tomorrow; Bank of Japan meet.

Midcap stocks saw some good moves in today's trading session giving the markets decent breadth and volume.

The Sensex closed flat at 11,149.17 up 4 points. The Nifty gained 6 points to close at 3260.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,487.18 up 100 points or 1.86%.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,560.78, up 63 points or 1.4%.

Among the midcap gainers; Geodesic was at Rs 151.20, up Rs 25.20 up 20.00%, Mercator Lines was at Rs 34.50, up Rs 4.80, or 16.16%, SRF was at Rs 238.35, up Rs 32.80, or 15.96%, Uttam Sugar Mills was at Rs 209.55, up Rs 26.75, or 14.63% and Rolta was at Rs 202.05, up Rs 22.30, or 12.41%.

Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed flat.  The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 1.37% at 2,931.17. Titan Industries, BPL, Blue Star and Su-Raj Diamonds were among top gainers

The BSE Bankex was up 0.9% at 5,103.37. PNB, Union Bank, IOB, Bank of India and ICICI Bank were among the gainers.

The BSE Metal Index advanced by 0.9% at 8,121.09. Hind Zinc , Jindal Saw, Sterlite Ind, Welspun Guj and Hindalco witnessed buying interest.

The BSE IT Index was up by 0.5% at 4,084.16 moved up. Mphasis BFL, HCL Tech, HCL Info, Wipro and Hexaware Tech jumped.

The BSE Health Care Index was up by 0.5% at 3,358.43. Wockhardt, FDC, Cipla, Matrix Lab and Glenmark closed higher.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.14% at 7,412.63. KEC Infrastructure, Aban LoydChiles, Crompton Greave and Alstom Projects closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index was down 0.5% at 1,919.10. Shaw Wallace, Britannia, ITC, Tata Tea and Nirma closed in green.

The BSE Auto Index lost 0.5% at 4,667.12 and the BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 0.21% at 5,083.34.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6362.48 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 21054.65 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3127.94 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 30545.07 crore.

Markets end flat; action shifts to mid cap/small cap stocks

SRF up 16%, Gujarat Flourochemicals up 10% on carbon credit

BSE Small Cap Index up 1.86%; commodity stocks gain; Adv/Dec ratio at 3:1

Goodricke Group up 20%, Oudh Sugar, Jayshree Tea up 10% each
NSE Advance Decline ratio at 7:3

Sensex @ 1435 hrs

Markets are sluggish and continue to trade below the flat line.

At 2:35 pm, the Sensex was trading at 11,116 down 28 points and the Nifty was trading at 3247 down 6 points.

The focus has shifted to midcaps like SRF, Indiabulls, Geodesic etc. Sugar stocks continue to move upwards. The CNX Midcap is up 1.2%.

BSE sectoral indices are trading mixed. Oil & gas, FMCG and auto are among the major laggards. However buying is seen in select conumer durables and metal stocks.

Top Gainers on the Sensex are HDFC up 2.07%, Cipla up 1.59%, Hindalco up 1.46%, Wipro up 0.56%

Top Losers on the Sensex are Bajaj Auto down 2.38%, Reliance Comm down 2.20%, Satyam down 1.67% and ITC down 1.6%.

Sensex @ 1256 hrs

The markets are trading weak amid volatility. At 12.56 pm IST, the Sensex was down 23 points or 0.21% at 11,122.18, and the Nifty down 4.60 points or 0.14% at 3,250.

About 1345 shares have advanced, 861 shares declined, and 70 shares are unchanged.

Biggest movers on the indices were HDFC, Cipla, Hindalco, Grasim, PNB, Tata Tea and GlaxoSmithKline.

Bajaj Auto, ONGC, Satyam, ITC and Reliance were major laggards on the indices. The BSE small cap and midcap indices were up 1.46% and 1.04% respectively.

Stocks like Titan Industries, BPL, Blue Star, Su-Raj Diamonds were moved up. The BSE consumer durable index was up 3.41% at 2958.08.

BSE Midcap gainers
Geodesic was quoting at Rs 147.10, up Rs 21.10, or 16.75%.
Uttam Sugar was quoting at Rs 203.35, up Rs 20.55, or 11.24%.
Mercator Lines quoting at Rs 32.75, up Rs 3.05, or 10.27%.

BSE smallcap gainers
Goodricke Group was quoting at Rs 85.25, up Rs 13.20, or 18.32%.
Wendt was quoting at Rs 674.00, up Rs 61.50, or 10.04%
BF Utilities was quoting at Rs 1,332.75, up Rs 121.15, or 10.00%.

Sensex @ 1208 hrs

The markets slipped into the red due to selling pressure seen in select auto, FMCG and oil & gas stocks.

At 12.08 pm, the Sensex was down 29.65 points or 0.27% at 11,115.53, and the Nifty down 9.95 points or 0.31% at 3,244.65.

About 1302 shares have advanced, 799 shares declined, and 73 shares are unchanged.

Major losers were on the indices are ONGC Rs 1,191.00 (down 1.07%), Tata Motors Rs 787.50 (down 0.86%), Satyam Rs 759.00 ( down 0.8%) and Jet Airways Rs 516.00 ( down 1.24%). Auto, FMCG and oil & gas indices were witnessing selling pressure.

Bajaj Auto was quoting at Rs 2,641.00, down Rs 43.5, or 1.62%.  ITC was quoting at Rs 176.05, down Rs 2.7, or 1.51%.

However, BSE capital goods index has outperformed the other indices, it was up 2.18% followed by healthcare, metal, bankex and capital goods.


Hindalco Rs 168.00 (up 2.38%), Cipla Rs 236.60 (up 1.96%), Grasim Rs 2,180.00 (up 1.61%), GlaxoSmithKline Rs 1,137.00 ( up 2.61%) and PNB Rs 406.00 ( up 2.18%) were the major gainers on the indices.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 225.90 up 0.85% from its previous close of Rs 224.00.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 983.50 down 0.29% from its previous close of Rs 986.40.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,704.90 up 0.23% from its previous close of Rs 1,701.05.

Sensex @ 1112 hrs

The markets have cooled off and are off their day's high due to profit booking setting in at the higher levels. At 11.12 am IST, the Sensex is up 24.23 points or 0.22% at 11,169.41, and the Nifty up 4.90 points or 0.15% at 3,259.5.

About 1320 shares have advanced, 535 shares declined, and 46 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are HDFC up 1.67%, Hindalco up 1.37% and HLL up 1.34%.

Top gainers on the Nifty are GlaxoSmithKline up 3.09%, Tata Tea up 2.48% and PNB up 2.47%.

Top losers on the Sensex are ONGC down 1.24%, Tata Motors down 0.77%, HDFC Bank down 0.77%.

Top losers on the Nifty are ONGC down 1.42%, Jet Airways down 1.28% and Satyam down 1%.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 983.00 down 0.34% from its previous close of Rs 986.40.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,706.10 up 0.3% from its previous close of Rs 1,701.05.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 178.60 down 0.08% from its previous close of Rs 178.75. Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 223.70 up 1.02% from its previous close of Rs 221.45.

Markets @ 10:07 am

The markets are witnessing volatility in morning trade as global cues were down on worries about erratic oil prices and profit booking at higher levels.

At 9:57 am, the Sensex was down 49 points at 11096. The Nifty was down 12 points at 3241. However, the CNX Midcap was up 12 points at 4047.

The Sensex however recovered lost ground quickly and is now up 39 points at 11,184, while the NSE Nifty is up 12 points at 3,267.

Hindalco, Tata Steel, Bharti, Gujarat Ambuja Cements, Bharat Forge, Uttam Sugar, NTPC, Cipla, Dr Reddy's, Hero Honda, Balrampur Chini and Indiabulls were up modestly higher.

However, top losers were ONGC, SBI, Infosys, L&T, ITC, BHEL and ICICI Bank.

Asian markets were trading lower. Japan's Nikkei share average plunged 100.42 points or 0.64% at 15,556.17.

FIIs were net buyers of $64.2 million and MFs net sellers of Rs 126.5 crore (Rs 1.26 billion) in equity on August 8.

US stocks plunged on erratic oil prices; the Dow fell 97.41 points, or 0.87%, to 11,076.18.
