The markets closed weak with midcap and smallcap stocks being knocked harder than the largecap stocks. The markets opened on a positive note but saw highly volatile trades throughout the day. The Sensex was down 66.44 points to close at 10,226.78. The Nifty shed 14 points to close below the 3000 mark at 2994.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,059.07, down 117 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,200.53, down 65.41 points.
Most of BSE sectoral indices closed in red. However, select IT and heathcare stocks witnessed moderate buying.
The BSE Metal Index was down 3.3% at 7,728.77. Welspun Guj, Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel, Hindalco and Jindal Steel witnessed selling pressure.
The BSE Capital Goods Index down 2.1% at 6,579.13. Praj Industries, Ingersoll Rand, KEC Infrastructure, Carborundum and Alfa Laval closed lower.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index lost 2% at 2,636.97. Titan Industries, Whirlpool and BPL lost ground.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed down 1.7% at 4,976.95. Chennai Petro, MRPL, GAIL and Reliance were among the losers.
The Auto index closed at 4,306.63 down 0.81%. Tube Investment, TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland, Bharat Forge, Amtek Auto and Hind Motors closed lower.
The BSE FMCG Index was down 0.8% at 1,891.96. McDowell, ITC, Shaw Wallace, Colgate and Britannia closed in red.
The BSE Bankex was down 0.88% at 4,108.25. Canara Bank, Bank of India, UTI Bank, Allahabad Bank and Bank of Baroda were among the losers.
The BSE IT Index was up 1% at 3,857.19. Hexaware Tech, Infosys, Satyam and Wipro moved up.
The BSE Health care index closed flat at 3,029.35. Sterling Bio, Sun Pharma, Cipla and Ipca Labs closed in the green.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5572.67 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 21725.43 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2676.56 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 29974.66 crore.
